FIBA World Cup Russia

As a new piece of information has come to light, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has made the decision to prevent teams from Russia and Belarus from participating in the 2023 World Cup.

As a new piece of information has come to light, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has made the decision to prevent teams from Russia and Belarus from participating in the 2023 World Cup. This is the latest blow to be dealt to Russia as international pressure on the country continues to mount in the wake of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of the neighboring Ukraine, which is now on day 84. The governing bodies of other sports, such as Formula One, football, and chess, had previously made the decision to either postpone their events that were scheduled to take place in Russia or to prevent their teams from competing in those events.

Russia and Belarus are banned from the 2023 Basketball World Cup by FIBA

On May 18, FIBA issued a comprehensive press release to indicate that they will not allow any teams from Russia or Belarus to participate in the 2023 World Cup. According to their announcement, the participation of Russian and Belarusian teams and officials in the qualifying round for the Basketball World Cup will now be authorized. In the meantime, their teams have been eliminated from competition in the Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 and the Under-17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022. The complete press release can be found below in its entirety:

The FIBA Executive Committee today confirmed the following decisions regarding the Russian Basketball Federation (RBF) and the Belarusian Basketball Federation (BBF) for FIBA Basketball Competitions that will take place in the upcoming months, in addition to the decision made on March 1, 2022 and confirmed by the Central Board on March 25, 2022, to not allow Russian teams and officials to participate in FIBA Basketball and 3×3 Basketball competitions.

The following is what the FIBA Executive Committee has decided:

  • Russia and Belarus will not host any FIBA Official Basketball Competitions until further notice.
  • The following FIBA National Team Competitions require teams from the RBF and the BBF to withdraw.

Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

In the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers, Russia has been removed from Group H, and Belarus has been removed from Group B, but there have been no replacement teams appointed. All of the results from both teams are thrown out, and as a direct consequence of this, the other teams in the Group advance to the second round of Qualifiers with four games under their belts.

In order to classify teams across these two groups (H and G; A and B) in a manner that is consistent with one another, the first-round games that were played against the teams with the lowest rankings in Group G and Group A will not be taken into consideration for the classification to Groups L and I.
