Turner didn’t even start to take soccer seriously until he was 15 years old and watching Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, and Tim Howard lead the United States into the knockout stage of the World Cup in the summer of 2010. At that time, he caught World Cup fever.
After playing college soccer for four years at Fairfield University, a mid-major school, he was not selected in the Major League Soccer draft in 2016, but the New England Revolution signed him after he impressed while he was on trial. Even so, it took Turner a full three years before he became the Revs’ top player.
But once he got the job, he didn’t let go of it, and in January of 2021, he earned his first cap for the United States Men’s National Team thanks to his elite shot-stopping. Turner was the starting goalkeeper for the United States national team during that summer’s Gold Cup tournament, and because Zack Steffen, the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper, was unable to play due to injury, the United States qualified for the World Cup with Turner in net. Because of this, English Premier League powerhouse Arsenal decided to recruit the 2021 MLS goalie of the year. Arsenal is a member club of the MLS.
